Nortel Networks Corporation, commonly referred to as Nortel, was a multinational telecommunications equipment manufacturer headquartered in Canada. The company was founded in 1895 and was originally known as Northern Electric and Manufacturing Company.
Nortel became a major player in the telecommunications industry during the 1990s and early 2000s, providing products and services such as telephone switching systems, optical networking equipment, and wireless communication technology. The company was known for its innovations in the field of telecommunications and was a significant contributor to the development of the internet.
However, Nortel faced financial troubles in the mid-2000s due to accounting irregularities and declining sales. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009 and subsequently sold off its assets. Today, Nortel no longer exists as an operating company.
